Update: I’m scared

Well… The tide went down and we are anchored in around 1.8 feet of water. Before Tom dropped the anchor, I told him we are in 3.3 feet of water according to my depth finder on my phone, it’s been pretty accurate so far. He said there’s no way. It seemed like we were floating really well so I figured it was a glitch and didn’t have a second thought about it.

After getting ready for bed I noticed the boat was slanting heavily to the starboard side. It feels like it’s going to tip over on its side. Tom says there’s no way the boat is going to tip over and that the tide will raise eventually. I told him I was scared and that I think the boat is going to tip over. He said everything is perfectly fine and we’re safe. He went down to his cabin and went to bed.

Everything from the port side is falling and sliding down the starboard like a scene from the Titanic. That’s literally the images I keep getting from the kitchen plates and everything sliding and falling over.

I called Rich to tell him the boat was going to tip over and he burst out laughing. I screamed at him. He said he’s 1000% positive that the boat will not tip over because of how heavy the keel is.

All I know is I’m uncomfortable and everything just keeps falling and sliding all over the place. On top of that a tropical storm is coming in. Rich thinks it’s hilarious and insisted I made this update and that I’m going to be fine. I’m not going to bed tonight.

I am sorry you are scared and it reminds me of all the phone calls I received from Joanne on their previous trip- Rich has my phone # so get it and call me anytime day or night and I will talk to you- take care- this is a trip for 2 experienced navigators and Tom has shown in the past he does not always use good judgement- running aground 4 times from Va to NC is concerning

It’s okay. I’m a little bit of a baby sometimes. Haha Joanne is probably laughing her butt off right now. I’ll get your number from Rich and call you. Thanks Margaret. I wish that I was more experienced. I’m getting a lot better, but still a beginner. I’ve been watching my depth finder like a hawk now, studying the water way guides and reviewing the NOAA charts religiously now. Tom’s doing his best. We’re are trying to work better as a team. I’m not a very good first mate, but I’m learning a lot. Love you!

ahhh, sailing with Tom. a couple of sailing rules. the most important are that the pointy end goes first and never throw up upwind. Everything else is trivial.and, as philosophy, when you go sailing, you either have a great time or you end up with a great story. Embrace this wonderful adventure.. Very few people in the world could even conceive of what you are doing much less appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of the actual trip. As far as the boat turning over, the weight in the keel far exceeds the weight topside so it physically impossible for it to flip over. Any finally, two people in the confined space of a boat trying to make time is a sure recipe for friction and occasional blowouts. That’s why you don’t keep a gun aboard. There are going to be continued frustrations like running aground and other unexpected events. Just try to roll with the punches and hug Paisley, it will all make for great memories. Ask Tom about when we ran ground in Roadtown in the British Virgin Islands and had to launch the dingy with a halyard to pull the boat over enough to get off the bottom. Even when I sailed to Bermuda, I told Peggy I was never more that a mile and a half from land. I neglected to say that is was straight down. Stay safe and have. Remember that a sense of humor is a survival characteristic. Stay Safe and have fun. Yours in Covid.
