Osprey Marina SC to Carolina Beach NC

We woke up at 6:30 and pushed off at 7 am. The couple we were docked behind said they planned on anchoring in Tina’s Pocket in the Cape Fear River. Tom and I planned to anchor there and headed out. We got through all three of the swing bridges today quickly.

The current and the wind were in our favor today. We averaged 7-10 knots. Today was delightful and we put on some serious mileage. We traveled over 78 miles today.

We passed through notorious shoaling at the shallotte inlet and Lockwood folly’s inlet with ease.

We arrived at Tina’s pocket around 3:30 and it looked really gnarly and choppy. The couple that planned on anchoring there turned around and headed back to Southport. We decided to continue up the Cape Fear River. It made Tom a little nervous, but I told him to trust me. I’m so glad we made that decision. It was an extra 10 miles, but the current pulled us right along.

We pulled into a gorgeous anchorage in Carolina Beach around 5 pm. It has a great view and we are both really excited we traveled almost 80 miles in one day. That’s a record for us. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying watching the Pelicans dive into the water for fish. Tom made us corned beef and hash with poached eggs for dinner. It was so delicious and hit the spot.

We are planning on meeting our friend Bill Richards tomorrow to drop off his kayak he let us borrow. We are hoping to get to Swansboro tomorrow.

    Outstanding!
Please be very very careful at Brown’s inlet at Camp LeJeune Marine Base. Unbelievable and rapidly changing shoals. Last time i went thru there the channel was about five feet from the marsh grass on the west side. I’m not exaggerating: go to 1 or 2 knots as you approach, and stay slow until you are well clear. Hard, packed sand bottom. Thanks for the progress reports.
