Broken down in Wahoo river

Woke up this morning to a stunning sunrise. Tom pulled the anchor up and we took off. Well, about 300 yards from the anchorage the steering stopped working, while I was at the helm. It was a pretty scary feeling and I almost ran us into the marsh. I quickly threw it in reverse and Tom went and dropped the anchor again.

He started to diagnose what was wrong with the steering. There were issues with the steering cables and the gears. Tom told me to go throw some dirty clothes on because I was going to need them. I grabbed my outfit that had diesel fuel dumped all over it from last week.

It took all day just to get the gears working. They were a greasy black color with crud. I had to wash them off with Dawn and a plastic butter knife. It felt like I was back in the operated room doing surgery, except it was on a boat. Tom says at this point I might as well become a diesel mechanic, haha. When Tom didn’t need my help on the gears I started working on my boater safety course. It’s kept me busy.

We didn’t have enough daylight to fix the cables. Tom says it will take half a day tomorrow to finish. We were both exhausted and filthy. I was covered in oil. It was all over my face, arms, feet and legs. I had to use two shower wipes to get it all off.

I was too exhausted to make a big dinner so I made us ramen with poached eggs and roast beef. We saw another pretty sunset and I joked with Tom that we set our record today by traveling 300 yards. Hopefully we can get the steering cables back in order tomorrow so we can maybe go 30-40 miles. At least the boat decided to have issues here rather than in the ICW or under a bridge.

The ole yacht continues to rebel and maybe just loves Georgia. Sure hope you guys can slap her into shape and get this thing going again. You remain afloat which is a big part of this. Good luck tomorrow with taming this monster.
