Turtle Island SC to Wahoo River GA

Woke up at 6:30 this morning. I felt tired this morning, more than usual. It got better once we got going. We almost ran aground in the Savannah river. Thankfully we bounced off the bottom and carried on with our lives. It scared both of us.

We were stuck at a bascule bridge for over an hour. Our radio stopped working and I had to call the bridge tender on my cell. I asked Tom if I could take the helm to hold for the bridge while he went and fixed the radio. He was a little hesitant at first, but I convinced him to let me take the helm for a couple minutes. He fixed it pretty quickly, so I wasn’t really holding for very long.

We went through isle of hope. We saw lovely homes along the ICW. We crossed through hell’s gate no problem, we seemed to catch it at the right time. Georgia is beautiful and not as bad on the ICW as I thought it was going to be. My waterway guide makes it sound like it’s best to go out to sea for all of Georgia, but I’m enjoying it so far.

I was at the helm a lot today. Paisley kept trying to jump on my lap while I was sitting in the captain’s chair. It was pretty funny. We got a kick out of it.

The current was working in our favor today and we made our 60 mile goal for the day. I was surprised because we lost a lot of time waiting for that bridge to open earlier. We got into the Wahoo river anchorage around 4:00. It’s a lovely spot with palm trees and palmettos. It has pretty views all around it. We were able to avoid the shoaling area coming into the anchorage. We basically went all the way to the green beacon, flipped a U turn so we didn’t run aground before turning into the Wahoo river.

The sunset was a gorgeous orangish red this evening. It was stunning. I cooked clam linguini for dinner tonight. We are relaxing in the galley and figuring out where we are heading tomorrow.

Beautiful pix!! Will you or did you see any of Savannah, another gem of a city. If you have not, rent the Clint Eastwood movie, MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL. A true story which takes place in Savannah with a wonderful cast and many locals playing themselves. Georgia, like SC, has many beautiful barrier islands obviously on the Atlantic side. Enjoy Georgia and stay safe.

Thanks Uncle Rick! We didn’t get a chance to go to Savannah, but I’m dying to visit. I think Rich and I will stop there on the way to Florida. I will definitely watch that movie. Thanks for the suggestion. Hope you guys are doing well. 🙂
