Broad Creek NC to Norfolk VA

Woke up at 5:45 am and pulled the anchor up at 6 am. The wind was blowing 15-20 knots directly in our face. We averaged 4-6 knots all day because the wind was working against us. It was very cold again.

Crossing the Currituck sound was not pleasant. The wind was causing waves that kept hitting our beam and rocking the boat. It was choppy and my face has pretty bad wind burn.

We had 4 bridges and a lock that we had to go through. It was kind of a nightmare. The wind was so bad it was very difficult to control the boat while holding for the bridges.

There was a total jerk in a power boat in front of us when we were about to go through an opened bridge before the lock bridge. He said over the vhf radio to the bridge tender “There is no way this sailboat behind me is gonna make it, just close it on their heads.” I’m not kidding. We were literally 15-30 seconds behind the guy and I have no idea what his problem was. I was livid. I was about to cuss the jerk out on the radio and Tom said to let it go.

Well Karma is a wonderful thing. We pull into the Great Lock and the jerks had the hardest time tying their yacht up. Multiple people on the boat were screaming, freaking out and cussing. They lost their stern and it was a whole ordeal getting their boat tied up. It took three people on that boat to finally get it together. Tom pulls up behind them and I tie the boat up with a spring line midship by myself. No issues whatsoever. I was laughing.

After what felt like a million bridges we finally got into Norfolk. We traveled 62 miles today. We are anchored at hospital point in Norfolk. Tom made corned beef hash and eggs for dinner. We are very excited to be in Virginia. We are headed to Kilmarnock tomorrow.
